Acceptable Use Policy
DRAFT — pending review by counsel; not yet a binding legal document.
Fanfiled exists for fandom — fic, art, edits, theories, and the people who make them. These rules keep it safe. Violations can lead to content removal, feature restrictions, or account termination, with an in-app notice and appeal path where applicable.
Never allowed
- Child sexual abuse material or sexualization of minors — in any form, including drawn, written, or AI-generated. Detected material is reported to NCMEC as required by law.
- Non-consensual intimate imagery — including AI-generated depictions. A dedicated NCII intake with a 48-hour action window is planned but not yet built; until it launches, victims can request removal through our illegal-content notice form.
- Human-trafficking facilitation of any kind.
- Grooming or enticement of minors. Fanfiled is 18+, and conduct targeting minors anywhere is reportable and actioned.
- Credible threats, incitement, or celebration of violence.
- Malware, phishing, or platform abuse (spam, scraping at scale, ban evasion).
Sexually explicit content
Legal adult content is permitted on Fanfiled, subject to the rules below. This is a mature, 18+ platform, and mature themes — including sexually explicit fic, art, and edits between consenting adults — are part of fandom. Explicit content is:
- Only ever between adults, and never depicting real minors or the sexualization of minors in any form — the CSAM prohibition above is absolute and applies regardless of medium (drawn, written, or AI-generated).
- Marked as explicit automatically — you never declare anything at upload; our moderation classifier marks explicit media when it is processed, and a moderator can mark a post too. Marked posts are blurred for every reader until they choose to view them (Settings › “blur explicit content”, on by default, on web and in the app).
- Gated behind account-level age verification before public launch — a completed third-party age-assurance check, and location-based restrictions where state or national law requires them, will be required before explicit content is unlocked for viewing or upload once Fanfiled opens beyond the current private alpha.
[During the private alpha, every participant is an approved, 18+ adult under a non-disclosure agreement and this policy, and explicit uploads are open on that basis (decision of 2026-09-27). The age-verification vendor integration, geo-gating, gated delivery, and the federal recordkeeping this content type requires (18 U.S.C. §2257) remain prerequisites for public launch — see the Launch Checklist.]
Restricted
- Harassment: targeted abuse, dogpiling, or encouraging others to harass. Use block and report — reporting is anonymous.
- Hate: attacks on people based on protected characteristics, hate symbols and their glorification.
- Graphic violence: permissible only with clear context and content warnings; gratuitous gore is removed.
- Impersonation: parody must be clearly labeled; impersonating a real person or account is not allowed.
- Copyright: fan works live in a gray area we respect, but direct re-uploads of others’ work and commercial piracy are actioned under our DMCA process.
Reporting
Every post, reply, message, and profile has a report action. Reports are reviewed by a human, with a response-time target of 48 hours. Reporters are never identified to the reported party. If you don’t have a Fanfiled account, or the content isn’t something you can report in-app, use our public notice form instead — no account required.
Content moderation and your right to appeal
Where we remove content, restrict its visibility, or restrict your account on the basis of illegality or a policy violation, we’ll tell you the reason category and — except where the law requires otherwise (see “Content moderation” above) — you can appeal that decision in-app within 180 days. You can also seek an out-of-court dispute settlement or judicial redress; details are provided with each decision.
